Seb has also managed a real scoop. One of his heroes, Ralf Steadman, renowned for his political and social caricatures and cartoons, is coming to Westwerks in December to give a talk and demonstration to the children and parents of ArtRoom. More on that one nearer the time.

Contact Sebastian on 01273 240 308 for details of courses and after school classes.

A new phase for Werkshop

The opening of our latest space – Westwerks on Portland Road in Hove – sees Werkshop enter into a new phase for 2009. We have been proud to support local ethical business from the outset and our growing community includes a diverse range of individuals and businesses working together towards social change.

Through Westwerks we will focus on the challenges brought about by today’s busy lifestyles and throw-away consumer culture. We are looking to explore the role of disused or tired urban business spaces as hubs for innovation and the part they can play in sustainable local food production. We believe that local business, enterprise and communities can work together to change the way we use our land. We will be exploring various wellness themes including organic and permaculture gardening, education, nutrition, health and diet.

We are excited about developing an extended community to focus on these issues and look forward to working with you to make this happen. If you are already involved in projects Westwerks is a place for you. And if you aren’t but want to know more about what’s happening in your local area come along to find out more. This is your space.

As always, our spaces are the home to a range of individuals and a range of businesses so if you are working in this area and want to work in a space with others who share your aspirations for sustainable living please get in touch. In addition to our regular coworking, desk and office packages, we also provide workshop and events space and we are always looking for enthusiastic, passionate people to join our projects.

Projects and events programme

The Office Garden Share Project Westwerks is lucky to have a lovely old garden in need of some tender loving care. We have high hopes for this great space and our wish is for it to be a focal point for the building and our community. It is part of a grass roots local project called GrowBAC and is registered on the national Channel 4’s Landshare. If you would like to help us clear this jungle…

…and turn it into a place to grow veggies and a sensory garden please call Emma on 01273 900904 or email westwerks[at]werkshop.org.uk.

Workshops and Events >>Here is our programme of events for 2009. We offer a mixture of activities from networking events and lunchtime sessions, to whole and half day workshops. If you are looking for a venue to host your event or would like to talk about your project, group or organisation please call Emma on 01273 900904 or email westwerks[at]werkshop.org.uk.

About the building

41-43 Portland Road is a double fronted Victorian building in the west end of Brighton and Hove. Businesses started to use the space when the original two family homes were converted into office space for a local engineering firm forty years ago. The building has been through many changes since that time and 2009 sees the space entering into a new phase of growth and regeneration. If you have any stories about the building, Portland Road or the Poets Corner Area we would love to hear from you.
